Poeta Atlantiae:

The current Poeta Atlantiae's term will be ending shortly so she is hosting a competition at Ruby to find her successor!!! FULL DETAILS AND REQUIREMENTS HERE

"Greetings, Atlantia! My term as your Poeta comes to an end next month, and so I must seek my successor! Please read below for the details regarding this year’s Poeta Atlantiae Competition, to be held at Ruby Joust (5/27-5/30)."

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS: Submit two poems responding to the theme (below), each in a different form that is attested to within period (pre-1600). While the forms may be of your choice, I strongly encourage you to challenge yourself with at least one poem. Documentation is required; please keep documentation to less than 15 pages total.

THEME: “Glory and Vainglory.” Many cultures have been preoccupied with these concepts: for example, chivalric literature regularly ruminates on the spectrum of pride to conceit, celebrating the righteous display of the former and soundly condemning the latter, while Ancient Greece was obsessed with the danger of hubris. Thus:

  • The first poem, on Glory, must celebrate a hero or legend of Atlantia. Tell us a story that should ring through history; praise another’s deeds in word; celebrate a person, place, or thing that inspires you.
  • The second poem, on Vainglory, must speak a needed truth. Write elegy or lament for the result of hubris; ruminate on the conflict of pride and arrogance; confront an institution, an issue, or one’s self.

Note that while the first poem must be focused on Atlantia, the second’s topic is wide open as long as it speaks a needed truth on vainglory.

Full Pet Policy & FAQs:

Before You Go To Ruby Joust- Considerations and FAQs:

  • Know your pet! - You know your pet better than anyone else. If you think attending and/or camping with you dog(s) may pose a danger or threat to you or others, leave them at home.
  • ***Any dog bites will be reported to Hanover County Animal Control.***
  • Ask yourself is your pet(s) in good health - Are they in good enough shape to meet any physical demands of the trip? If your pet has trouble with longer walks and heat, please consider leaving your pet at home.
  • Vaccinations - Be sure your furry friend is up-to-date on all required vaccinations and protected against heartworm, fleas, and ticks. Dogs can encounter a variety of other animals while camping, even if they are leashed. Ask your vet about the area you'll be camping in to be sure your pet is protected.
  • Collars and ID - Outfit your pet with the right collar and ID tags. Your dog should always be leashed at an event, but in case they get lost- make sure they have their best chance at getting back to you. Keep a collar with ID tags securely on your dog at all times. Even well behaved dogs can slip out of a loose collar and chase after an animal if they become too excited.
  • Ask yourself how included will your pet be - Pets are family members, but if you plan on spending a lot of time participating in activities that are not pet friendly, you may want to consider alternative like a boarding facility.

What To Bring:

  • Food and Water - This is a bit obvious, but don't forget to pack your furry friend's food, water, and bowls. ***Bring extra food and water.*** Like you, your pet will be hungry and thursty from exerting extra energy due to activity and heat.
  • First Aid Kit - have on hand for minor scrapes/issues.
  • Towels - Towels will come in handy while you camp. From lining your car or tent to wiping off your dog, you'll probably use your towel so much you might want to bring two!

While You're At Ruby Joust Policies:

  • Be mindful of loud and potentially dangerous areas that may frighten or disrupt your pet.
  • Be courteous to others by picking up after your dog, not allowing your pet to urinate on other's belongings, and controlling barking/ other noise. If your pet is too loud, you will be asked to find alternate housing for them or you may be asked to leave the event/ site completely.
  • Keep your pet on a leash and attended by a responsible human being at all times.
  • Never leave your dog unattended in camp, on a tie out staked into the ground, or especially in a vehicle.

***Please note that ANY pet found in a vehicle during the event will be removed from the vehicle by a staff member (either by opening an unlocked door or breaking a window) without attempting to find their family beforehand, law enforcement will be called immediately to report the responsible pet party/ parties, and you will be required to pack up and leave the event for the remainder of the event. It is too hot to risk injury and death to your pet(s). ***If you are planning to use your vehicle as a containment option for a pet, please do not bring them with you.***

New Event COVID-19 Policy (5/25/2022):
  1. Masks are to be worn by all attendees inside buildings.

  2. Activity organizers may choose to require masks to be worn during participation in close contact areas. These areas, during each activity, will be clearly marked and identified as a “Mask Required” or “Mask Optional” location.

  3. Any pavilion/ day shade/ structure located in a common area of the event MUST be visually identified as a “Mask Required” or “Mask Optional” location. This area mask designation is the responsibility of the organizer/ agent of the area.

***Common areas*** for this event policy include, but are not limited to, areas around the list fields, merchants row, gate/troll, and all activity points during the event.

  4. The event will be providing visual identification for all structures and activities affected by the mask identification policy. If you have space registered in a common area but you do not wish for your pavillion/day shade/ structure to be designated as a “Mask Required” or “Mask Optional” location, please let us know and we will be happy to find an alternative location for your canvas/ structure to be put up.

  5. As there is only ONE drinkable water hose access point, this will be used for large container refilling and will be manned, sanitized, and maintained by an event staff member during the entirety of the event. People are encouraged to bring their refillable water coolers/ containers for camp and day shade/ pavilion water use. The on-duty event staff member will fill your container for you, sanitize the hose, and continue on to the next person/group needing water container filling/refilling. This water point will be open for use between the hours of 9am and 7pm; though not operational during court times. *Other open times will be dictated by volunteer availability.* If you would like to volunteer and help make sure this point stays as clean as possible for everyone’s use, please contact the Autocrat or Caer Mear Baronial Seneschal with your contact information and availability.

***Individual hydration points will also be marked and available across the site for use around activities occurring. These are smaller coolers placed around the site, maintained by the event staff, to fill personal/ individual drinking vessels, not large coolers/ gallon containers. To maintain sanitation standards, we ask that attendees refrain from using small-mouthed containers that may touch the disbursement valve points of the water coolers provided

We also ask that attendees follow the Society policy on attempted use of period drinking vessels (cups, mugs, glasses, etc…) instead of modern, plastic, and single use water bottles at hydration stations/ points. This will not only help keep the visual SCA immersion going but help keep the accidental drinking of someone else’s identical container at a minimum. On the side of the list field near the fighter water stations, single use, quick grab, drink, and toss paper cone cups will be provided in designated areas with disposal bins for immediate quick drink and toss away between fights. This is intended to have immediate access to water if needed for the fighters and marshals coming off of the field with the heat of the day occurring.

  6. Ice on-site will be delivered to camps, merchants, and field space pavilions Saturday and Sunday of the event at 9am and 3pm. If you would like to purchase ice for your camp/ group, please sign up at the event gate. Ice is being sold on site with delivery to you for $3/bag. Bags of ice on site are 7lbs. If you would like to obtain ice off site and would like directions to nearby locations, please see the list of stores and resources provided for attendees at the event entrance gate.

  7. After discussion with the Crown and concerns over the close proximity of people attending event courts, masks will be required for all individuals inside of the large shaded, overhead hall in the middle of the event site for courts. All individuals wishing to be under this shaded area are welcome. Masks will be provided for individuals who do not have a mask but would like to come and be in this area during courts. There are additional areas around the shaded hall, not directly underneath it, that people may choose to spread out where masks will not be required.

As we discuss and write this policy, only hours after the Kingdom Seneschal's announcement and branch meeting, it has been noted that in the last few weeks the local Virginia area’s Covid positivity rate has more than tripled from reported numbers at the start of May. We know some of you will be upset and disappointed in the return of masking policies and additional site rules. Please be mindful and understand that we are all doing the best we can to adapt and try to keep people safe as we all go forward.

For questions or concerns regarding this policy, please call Lady Olivia Isabelle, the Seneschal of Caer Mear, leading up to the event. Once on site for the start of the event, it is highly unlikely phone calls will be answered/ returned.

Thank you all for your time and we look forward to seeing those who can make it to join the Barony of Caer Maer at Ruby Joust X!
