Caritas – A Time for Caring

By Baron William Cameron

Greetings all,

Each year we help out Battery Park Church with their participation in the Caritas program as a thank you for letting us use the church for practice, meetings and other activities at no cost to us.

So what is Caritas?  Several churches in Richmond area take turns housing approx. 35-40 homeless people for a week.  They provide transportation, medical clinics and meals for these individuals.  What we have done for several years now is to take care of setting up cots before they arrive.  Then last year we cooked supper for them and they very much enjoyed the meal we served.

Once again this year we will be doing cot set up on Saturday, Jan 20th and will only take about an hour.  We will post to the email list what time volunteers will need to be there.

We will also be providing an evening meal on Tuesday, Jan. 23rd.  Master Fritz has graciously volunteered to head up the cooking.  This is where I need your help.  From now until Jan. 16th all money that is dropped in the donation jar for church at practice or meetings will go towards paying for the food.  I ask that you please consider a generous donation for this cause.  Please remember they give us the use of the church for free and this is a very good way give our support back to them.

If you have any warm clothes or shoes you would like to donate, please let me know as well.

Thank you,

Baron William

*Please note that the College of Yarnvid is also hosting a Caritas dinner at the Church of the Epiphany on Jan.18th from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm.  They are looking for at least 10 volunteers for the evening and are asking for donations to be able to buy enough food to feed 50 people.  Please contact Gwenllian at dniles@pipeline.com if you can assist in any way.

I want to thank everyone who helped out in 2006.  We had a good year and it could not of happened without your support.  As announced last month, Celric will be stepping up as Baronial Seneschal at Sapphire.  I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year.

 Winter Tidings

By: Ysabella Cacemoine

Rivers Point’s indoor Rapier-themed event titled “Winter Tidings” is drawing near.  It will be held at St. Joseph’s Parish Hall in Petersburg.  The site is wet so dust off those bottles of mead!  There will be an open A&S display and our Barony’s February Scriptorium meeting will be held there at the event so bring your projects.  Other activities include dancing and games.  The event runs from 11:30 am to 9:00 pm.  The cost is only $9 and includes a delicious feast prepared by Lady Sorcha and Master Fritz.  In support of our local event they are asking us to please PRE-REGISTER and bring a friend or two!  Contact the autocrat to find out where to mail your money and to maybe volunteer for an hour or two.  The autocrat is Sorcha Goughram (MKA Cindy Coles).  Contact Lady Sorcha at cyndyanne00@aol.com or (804) 536-1210

For additional information please check out the full event announcement published in the Acorn at http://acorn.atlantia.sca.org

A Persian Recipe for Orange Stew

By Ysolt de la Mere

This recipe comes from The Legendary Cuisine of Persia by Margaret Shaida.  A dish like this would have been served with gracious hospitality in the domiciles of Islamic Spain.  The sour orange or naranj was in cultivation in the Arab lands by the 10th century and had spread to the Iberian peninsula, along with lemons, citron and pummelos by the 12th century.

Ingredients:

4 to 5 lb chicken     1 tsp cinnamon              3  large carrots

2 medium onions    3  Seville oranges           ½  tsp liquid saffron

2 Tbs sugar            salt & pepper to taste      pistachio & almond slivers

Liquid Saffron: Place 20-30 threads of dry saffron in a mortar, adding a dozen or so grains of sugar and grind to fine powder. Mis with 4 or 5 tsp of tepid water and leave to infuse to a deep orange color.

Cut chicken into pieces, wash and pat dry.  Fry in a little oil until nicely browned.  Remove with slotted spoon and set aside.  Finely dice onions and fry in a little oil until soft and golden brown.  Stir in cinnamon, add chicken and enough water to cover.  Put on lid and simmer gently for 30 minutes.

Peel oranges with a peeler and cut rind into julienne strips.  Put into small pan, cover with cold water, bring to a boil then drain.  Repeat twice with fresh water and leave to drain.  With a sharp knife remove pith and skin from orange segments and set aside.

Peel carrots and cut into julienne strips.  Fry in oil for 20 minutes then add to the simmering stew for another 25 minutes.  A few minutes before serving add the liquid saffron, add sugar and orange segments.  Simmer for a minute or two.  Serve with plain white rice and garnish with 2 tsps each of pistachio and almond slivers.

Message from the Baron and Baroness

By William Cameron and Katerina Von Wolfenburg

Greetings!

We hope that everyone enjoyed the holidays.  We are looking forward to this coming new year and  plans have already started on several events including Winter Tidings and Sapphire Joust.  There are several projects already in progress too like the new banners, which are coming along really well.

Thank you to everyone who responded to our vote of confidence.  Their Majesties were very impressed with the number of responses They received.  We thank you for your support and look forward to the opportunity to continue serving the Barony.

Scriptorium/A&S gather for January will on the 20th at her Excellency’s house.  We will be continuing work on scrolls and the new banners.  We will post more information to the list as the date draws closer.  Thanks to Bojzena and TJ for opening up their home for the December gather.  The gather for February will be held at the Rivers Point event Winter Tidings on Feb. 24th.

We would like to thank Baroness Ysabeau for the wonderful job she has done as our Baronial Chronicler and wish her well as she returns to graduate school.  Thanks to Lady Ysabella for taking over the position.  She has some really good ideas and we look forward to working with her.

In Service,

William and Katerina

 Message from the New Chronicler

By: Ysabella Cacemoine

It has been my pleasure to step up to office.  Thank you Ysabeau for your courtesy in all that you have shown me.  Good luck in your continued education.

As of this last Barony meeting we discussed many a great ideas for articles in this publication.  One idea that really caught interest is “Meet the Barony”.  There are plenty of new people like myself in our Barony.  “Meet the Barony” will be a series of articles featuring our very own Populace.  Next month will start with a feature on our distinguished Baron & Baroness.  We’ll be starting with our Officers and long time Caer Mear-ians.  If you fall into that category please send me your submissions with photos or heraldry.  Lady Ysolt has created a form to make submissions easy.  You can find this form on our Caer Mear chat under “Files” named “About Me”.  I will be glad to meet with anyone who needs help getting a photo in garb.  I am asking for everyone’s assistance in this project.  It will be fun and informative.  And inquiring minds want to know!

Work is being continued on a new updated web site.  When this project will be completed and implemented is still unknown at this time.  In the meantime, I am continuing my best efforts to keep the current site as up to date as possible.
